REDCURRANT REDCURRANT

REDCURRANT

RED BERRIES OR REDCURRANTS

ORIGIN:
Belgium/the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Germany.

DESCRIPTION:

The red currant is the most popular variety of all currants. There are also white currants and black currants. The currants need a lot of sunshine to ripen. Without sunshine, they remain sour and a lot of sugar needs to be added. Their red berries are very small and they grow in strings. They are bright-red and have a fine yellow-green stalk at the bottom. The berries have a fresh sour taste. Red currants are very healthy. They contain a lot of vitamins and fibres. Eaten on their own, red currants are extraordinarily low in calories.

AVAILABILITY:
Throughout the year. July and August are the top months.

CONSUMPTION:
Carefully rinse the currants before consumption. Take the currants off the stems and powder with sugar or add them to fruit salad, dessert plates, mixed salad, ice cream, pudding, …
Strings of currants can also be used to decorate cocktails, cold dishes and various desserts.

How to ‘Stem’ red currants:
Hold a string of red currants above a bowl with one hand and a fork in the other. Place the fork at the top of the string and pull the fork down, dislodging the currants while you go..

STORAGE:

Store the berries in the refrigerator and spread them out on a plate or dish to prevent them from bruising.
