STRAWBERRY

strawberry

The strawberry is one of the most popular soft fruits. Strawberries used to be available only during summer. But nowadays, we can enjoy this healthy delicacy throughout the year. Fresh strawberries are not only very delicious and polyvalent, they are also, and particularly, very healthy because of their high content of vitamin C (50 milligram per 100 gram) and their low calorific value. There is a wide range of strawberry varieties, each having its own specific qualities and taste. Fresh strawberries should be solid and should look shiningly fresh and brightly red.

ORIGIN:
Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Egypt, Israel.

AVAILABILITY:

throughout the year

STORAGE:
It is best to consume strawberries as soon as possible after purchase/harvest. If necessary, store them, with the stalks still attached, in the refrigerator, but not longer than 48 hours. Freezing strawberries is possible, but afterwards, the fruits can only be used for conversion into coulis, jam or syrup.   Once thawed, they lose their beautiful colour and tasty look.

CONSUMPTION:

Carefully rinse the strawberries before consumption. Only hull them after rinsing to prevent the fruit from taking up too much water and losing flavour. After rinsing, drain the strawberries and pat them dry with kitchen paper. Strawberries are delicious on their own. You can also eat them with sugar, yoghurt, fresh cheese, ice cream, pudding and whipped cream or sprinkle them with liqueur. They are delicious in chocolate fondue, in a fruit salad or in the form of ice cream, syrup, sorbet, milk beverages and as a filling on pastries and cake.
